We recently brought our April Shoe Drive to close. Collecting shoes is one thing, but processing them all is quite another. That was our project for Wednesday this week. We had been stockpiling the bags of shoes as they were coming in throughout the drive. (The garage was full.) Early this morning, we packed bag after bag into the back of the pickup and began the journey to Share Your Soles. (The bags were stacked so high, I’m surprised we didn’t lose any along the way.)

At Share Your Soles we received a warm welcome as always and got to work processing our shoes. We unloaded them all and began the count and sort. Four hours of hard labor later, we’re happy to report that we collected 551 pairs of shoes bound for those in need across the globe. Great work to everyone who contributed to this effort. Thank you so much.

April 30, 9:30-2:00 and May 1, 1:00-3:00, Act Out Now will hold its second annual service-learning and volunteer fair at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, IL. This free, public event is a wonderful, largely student-run program, supported graciously by the administration at Moraine Valley and hosted by the Moraine Valley Library. It promises to be even bigger and better than last year.

Students from composition, American history, political science, and the honors program bring you an education-through-action event. Come see what the students have been up to and learn about how you can get involved through service and action in your community.

Local nonprofit organizations will be there to tell you about what they do and what you can do to help. The event’s spotlight speaker is Jodie Lieffring, the Regional Volunteer Coordinator from the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago. Other spotlight speakers include Claudia Ayala from the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization and Moraine Valley’s very own Tamarra Coleman-Hill. Speakers will talk about their respective organizations, civic engagement, opportunities for service and activism through internship and volunteerism, and the power of people working together to make positive and sustainable change.

Students’ visual and video projects will also be on display for the duration of the fair connected to the themes of service, activism, and civic engagement. Refreshments will be served.

Come on out for two great days of community, compassion, and action.

Visit the event page at Act Out 2013 for all the details. See you there.
